Keep the View, Lose the Glare
On a picture window that frames a view, we almost always recommend the 4½" louver. Fewer, wider louvers mean fewer horizontal lines across the glass, so when the shutters are open the view reads nearly uninterrupted. It is the most contemporary of the three sizes and the best choice for large openings.
The trade-off people expect — that a wider louver seals less well — is not the case here. Norman® Woodlore® closes tight at every louver size, so the same window that disappears into the view at 10am blocks the sun completely at 4pm. The 4½" louver. It puts the fewest horizontal lines across the glass, so the view stays as open as possible when the shutters are folded back or the louvers are level. The 3½" is our most popular size overall and is the safer choice if you want a more traditional look, and 2½" suits smaller rooms and cottage-scale windows.
Yes — it is a large share of what we do up here. Arches, eyebrows, trapezoids, and clerestories following a roofline are all custom-manufactured to the template we take in your home. Some companies quote these punitively or steer you away from them. We measure them the same way we measure everything else.
It is Norman®'s patented hidden tilt system — a gear mechanism inside the stile that replaces the visible center rod. You tilt one louver and the panel follows. On large, clean-lined interiors it is usually the detail that makes the install look built-in rather than added on. We will show you both on samples and let you decide; we do not push the upgrade.
No, and that is deliberate. A showroom is rent, staff, and inventory that ends up in the price of your shutters. Instead, Kurt brings the samples to your home, where you can hold finishes against your own trim and see louver sizes against your own windows in your own light.
