Custom Shutters Without the Showroom Markup
When two companies quote you the identical Norman® shutter and the numbers are meaningfully different, the product did not change. The cost structure behind the number changed. This page explains exactly what that means, and what you do and do not give up by buying direct.

What You Are Actually Paying For in a Showroom Quote
A retail showroom is a legitimate business with real expenses. A lease on a visible commercial space, utilities on it, staff to be there during opening hours, display inventory that is bought and never sold, marketing to get people through the door, and sales representatives paid a percentage of what they close. Every one of those is a genuine cost, and every one of them has to be recovered somewhere. It is recovered in the price of the product.
That is not a scandal — it is arithmetic. The question worth asking is whether that spending buys you anything as the customer. For a product that is custom-manufactured to your window measurements and installed in your home, our view is that it mostly does not. You are not taking shutters home from a store. Someone still has to come to your house, measure your openings, and fit them.
What Changes When a Commissioned Rep Is in the Middle
The second cost is subtler than rent, and it changes the conversation rather than just the number. When the person in your living room is paid a percentage of the sale, several things follow naturally:
- The recommendation drifts up. Upgrades get presented as defaults. Motorization on every opening rather than the four you cannot reach. The larger package rather than the right one.
- "Do less" is a hard sentence to say. If two rooms genuinely do not need shutters yet, a commissioned rep has a real disincentive to tell you that. An owner does not.
- The close gets engineered. The high opening number, the call to a manager, the discount that expires when they walk out. A price that can fall dramatically in one afternoon was never a real price.
- The monthly payment replaces the total. A monthly figure is easier to agree to than a total, so that is often what gets put in front of you.
None of this requires anyone to be dishonest. It is what a commission structure does to a conversation. Removing it is most of what "buying direct" actually means.
One number, in writing, and it is the same number next week. No expiring discount, because there is no inflated starting point to discount from. Kurt does the consultation and the measurement himself, so the person quoting your job is the person responsible for it.

What You Give Up — Honestly
Two things, and it is fair to name them.
You cannot walk into a store. Some people genuinely want to browse a floor on a Saturday before committing, and we do not offer that. What we offer instead is the full sample set in your living room, held against your trim, at a time you choose. Most people find that a better comparison once they have done it, but it is a different experience and worth knowing up front.
There is no call center. You deal with a small local company. The protections that actually matter are unaffected — the Norman® manufacturer warranty is lifetime on many products and transfers to the next owner of your home, and it comes from Norman® regardless of who installs it, plus we carry our own labor warranty on the installation. But if a 24-hour support line is important to you, that is a real difference.
What Stays Exactly the Same
The product
Norman® Woodlore® — the same manufacturer, the same line, the same solid wood composite core rated to 140°F, the same factory-cured finishes.
The warranty
Lifetime manufacturer coverage on many products plus a 10-year no-questions-asked replacement on specific models, transferable to the next owner.
The custom manufacturing
Every panel built to the measurements taken in your home. Nothing is pulled from a stock size and trimmed to fit, and specialty shapes are templated in person.
The installation standard
Installed by a technician with 25+ years in the Phoenix metro, usually in one to two scheduled days, finishing with a walkthrough of every opening.
How the Process Works
- Free in-home consultation. Kurt comes to you with physical samples, walks every opening, and answers questions. About an hour.
- Precise measurement. Every opening measured at multiple points, specialty shapes templated. Nothing estimated.
- Written quote. One number, no expiry. Take as long as you want with it.
- Custom manufacturing. Norman® builds to your exact specification.
- Installation and walkthrough. Typically one to two days, and we operate every panel with you before we leave.

Buying Direct FAQs
Can I see the shutters somewhere before I buy?
Yes — in your own home, which is the better place to see them. Kurt brings physical samples of the finishes, the louver sizes, and the tilt options and holds them against your actual trim and windows in your actual light. A showroom floor is lit to flatter the product and tells you very little about how a finish reads on your wall.
Is a cheaper price a sign of a cheaper product?
It can be, which is why the first question to ask any quote is which manufacturer and which specific product line it covers. In our case the product is identical — Norman® Woodlore®, the same warranty, the same factory. What differs is that our number does not carry a retail lease, floor staff, display inventory, or a sales commission.
Who actually comes to my house?
Kurt, the owner. He does the consultation and takes the measurements himself. The installation is handled by our installer, who has been fitting shutters into Phoenix metro homes for more than 25 years. That is the whole company — there is no dispatcher in the middle and no rep working a quota.
Will I get pressured or chased afterward?
No. You get a written quote and you decide on your own timeline. There is no sign-tonight discount because there is no inflated starting number to discount from, and there is no call-the-manager routine. If you want to take our quote and compare it against others, that is a reasonable thing to do and we will say so.
Do you sell any other brands?
No. Norman® Woodlore® only, every time. Kurt installed most major brands for years and watched the lesser ones warp and fade in Arizona heat, so he committed to the one he was willing to put his name on. Selling a single line means we know every configuration of it rather than knowing four lines shallowly.
Is a smaller company riskier than a national brand?
It is a fair question. The protections that matter are the Norman® manufacturer warranty — lifetime on many products, transferable to the next owner of your home — which comes from the manufacturer regardless of who installs it, plus our own labor warranty on the installation. What you give up by not going national is a call center.
What about financing or a monthly payment plan?
We do not build a financing program into the price. In-home sales operations often present a monthly payment rather than a total because the monthly number is easier to say yes to. We quote the total, in writing, and let you decide how to pay for it.
Talk to the Owner, Not a Sales Rep
Kurt comes to your home with the full Norman® sample set, measures every opening, and leaves a written quote that is still the same price next week. No showroom, no commission, no sign-tonight discount.
