One of the first decisions you'll make when choosing plantation shutters is louver size. Norman® Woodlore is available in 2½", 3½", and 4½" louver widths, and the difference is more significant than it might sound in inches. The size you choose affects the visual weight of the shutter, how much unobstructed view you get when the louvers are open, and how the shutters read in proportion to your specific windows.
Here's how to think through the choice.
What the Numbers Mean
The louver size refers to the width of each individual slat. A 2½" louver produces more slats across the panel height, which gives the shutter a more detailed, traditional look. A 4½" louver produces fewer, wider slats with a bolder, more contemporary appearance and a wider-open view when the louvers are rotated open.
Think of it as the difference between a classic plantation look and a modern, airy look.
The 2½" Louver: Traditional and Detailed
The 2½" louver is the smallest available in Norman® Woodlore and creates the most traditional plantation shutter aesthetic. More slats across the panel height gives the shutter visual texture and a classic feel that works well in:
- Smaller windows where larger louvers would look out of proportion
- Rooms with a more traditional or transitional design style
- Windows where you want the shutter to feel like a natural part of the woodwork
The trade-off: when the louvers are open, the view through a 2½" louver panel is more obstructed than through a larger louver, because the slats overlap more at the same angle.
The 3½" Louver: The Most Versatile Choice
The 3½" louver is the most popular size we install, and for good reason—it works in almost any window and splits the difference between traditional and contemporary. It's proportional to a wide range of window heights and provides a noticeably more open view than the 2½" when the louvers are rotated open.
For most Phoenix metro homes—where windows tend to run on the larger side—the 3½" louver reads correctly in proportion without feeling either fussy or oversized. If you're unsure where to start, this is usually where we begin the conversation.
The 4½" Louver: Modern and Open
The 4½" louver creates the most dramatic, open look. Fewer, wider slats give the shutter a bold, contemporary character and the widest unobstructed view when the louvers are fully open. This size works especially well in:
- Large or floor-to-ceiling windows
- Rooms with a modern or minimalist design aesthetic
- Spaces where natural light and outdoor views are the priority
The 4½" louver can look out of proportion on shorter windows—the wide slats need adequate panel height to feel natural. For windows under about 36" tall, the 3½" usually looks better.
How Room Lighting Affects the Choice
The louver size also influences how your room feels in terms of light. Larger louvers, when fully open, let in more light per slat because there's less material blocking the view. In a darker room where you want to maximize natural light without removing the shutters entirely, larger louvers give you more flexibility.
In a room that gets very intense direct sun—common in south- and west-facing Arizona rooms—larger louvers also let you block more light more efficiently when closed, since each louver covers more surface area.
See It in Your Home Before You Decide
The most reliable way to choose a louver size is to see the options in your actual windows. That's why we bring Norman® sample panels to every in-home consultation. You can hold a 2½" panel and a 3½" panel side by side in your own window and see immediately which one feels right.
No brochure photo or showroom display replicates this. The proportions that look correct in a catalog photo depend on the window in the photo—not yours. In your space, in your lighting, with your walls and trim as context, the right choice usually becomes clear quickly.
